Cruilety at its max...Paying to cover crime is custom here

Udgir (Latur dist): Fourteenyear-old Taslima Bagwan may have been given a silent burial by her tormentors on December 31. The incident, however, has ignited an angry debate on the rising incidence of crime against women in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra as well as the cover-ups.
Shocking but true, said Sanjay Lathkar, superintendent of police, Latur. “Of the 100 death cases registered with the police more than 50% of the victims are women. And in most cases the cause of death is shown to be due to jumping in a village well or hanging.’’ Lathkar said, recounting experiences in Parbhani district, a communally sensitive district in the region,
where the IPS officer was posted six months back.
Ditto in Nanded and Latur, two high-profile but declared ‘most backward’districts in the state in the Human Development Index report prepared by the Maharashtra Planning Board in 2001. While child marriages are rampant here, strong caste dynamics and a still-prevailing feudal order have resulted in a large number of cases where husbands re-marry without divorcing the first wife.
In fact, the outrage over the Taslima Bagwan rape case has opened a Pandora’s box. Media glare has given many the courage to walk up to a police station and report such incidents which were “downplayed’’ by family members and the authorities in the past.
    “I have been handed names
of five women from the district who have died under suspicious circumstances. In all cases, the women were found dead by jumping into the well. I have asked for a thorough probe and if there is any room for suspicion we will initiate action against those involved in creating compelling circumstances,’’ the top police officer told TOI.
Senior officials said the incidents concerning crimes against women are often not reported and in most cases the families mutually resolve the issue with money paid in re
turn for the loss of life.
Taslima Bagwan’s case is itself a typical example. After the girl from the sleepy Dawangaon village, 15-km from Udgir town, was killed, her parents were allegedly offered Rs 50,000 to forgive the four youths who are arrested in connection with the rape and murder. “Whether fear of the majority members of the village or the promised cash payout was the reason why the case was not reported to the police is a matter of investigation. However, the fact remains that such incidents are not few,’’ a Udgir resident associated with the NCP said.
The money that is provided to silence the victim’s relatives, is almost a matter of custom. “It has become so prevalent that the families haggle for the cash. In a recent incident of dowry
death in a village, the woman’s body was lying unattended while her in-laws and parents sat across to negotiate the terms and cash. When such dealings take place, the crime is almost never reported,’’ said Lathkar.
The incidence of “settlement’’ or cases were such crimes are downplayed are said to have been rising due to attempts to create a “false halo around a village that it is strifefree’’ as prescribed under the norms of the state-sponsored Mahatma Gandhi Tanta Mukti Gaon Abhiyan, a pet project of deputy chief minister RR Patil. In Latur district, barring one, all 740-plus villages have enrolled for this novel competition where prize money will be awarded by the state if they remain free of crime or internal fights.

Google Special Operators

Most of the people know just using Google for searching by typing the query in the text box.Apart from that Google has got some special operators which can be helpful in retrieving more information particularly about the websites.

Alternate query types

Cache Operator : The query [cache:] will show the version of the web page that Google has in its cache. For instance, [cache:fivepointsome1.blogspot.com] will show Google's cache of the Five point someone homepage. Note there can be no space between the "cache:" and the web page url. If you include other words in the query, Google will highlight those words within the cached document. For instance, [cache:fivepointsome1.blogspot.com web] will show the cached content with the word "web" highlighted.

link: This is used to find all websites which link to your webpage.
This functionality is also accessible from the Advanced Search page, under Page Specific Search > Links. For instance, [link:fivepointsome1.blogspot.com] will list webpages that have links pointing to the Five point someone homepage.

Stocks:I
f you begin a query with the [stocks:] operator, Google will treat the rest of the query terms as stock ticker symbols, and will link to a page showing stock information for those symbols. For instance, [stocks: intc yhoo] will show information about Intel and Yahoo. (Note you must type the ticker symbols, not the company name.)This functionality is also available if you search just on the stock symbols (e.g. [ intc yhoo ]) and then click on the "Show stock quotes" link on the results page.

Google account disabled by mistake

Dec 12, 2007
In a very recent incident, Google had accidentally disabled some Gmail accounts in an attempt to deal with spammers.

Some users posted their grievance on the Gmail Help Discussion Forum about their accounts being locked.

However, a Google staffer, who monitors and posts messages on Gmail Help forum, acknowledged the existence of the occurrence on behalf of the company.

Identifying the problem, Google said that their efforts to prevent breach of the Terms of Use (policy) caused a number of users to be incorrectly identified as spammers or other abusive users.

Several hours later, Google Guide declared that things were back to normal and the accounts that were disabled have regained access with no data loss.

Meanwhile, the messages that were sent to the displaced account during the problem period will not reach the inbox, but bounce back to the sender, Google said.

Like a kid in a candy store

Does stuff like this happen in real life? I thought these scenarios only played out in mid-summer B-movie comedies.

To many women, he is simply “the boy.” They know who he is, even if they do not know his name. They know his story, even if they have never spoken to him.
more stories like this

In the small, all-female world of Wellesley College, Mohammad Usman is famous in this way. He is literally a man among women - about 2,300 women. Usman, 19, is the only man attending Wellesley College this fall.

“A lot of people don’t know his name, really,” said Johanna Peace, a Wellesley junior and the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, the Wellesley News. “They’re aware that there’s a boy on campus. And if they see him, they’ll say, ‘Oh - there’s the boy.’ “

You got that? He’s becoming a folk hero. Desis have arrived when some of us begin to achieve folk hero status. So what is it about Usman that let the Wellesley administration let this rooster in the hen house? They actually have an exchange program. Some people want to be exchanged to a foreign school. Those people are stupid. Why go abroad to meet a cute Euro/Australian/South American girl for the summer when you could attend an all-girl school (with more favorable odds) right here?

He wanted to come for the educational experience. (And the women.) He was looking forward to living near Boston. (And lots of women.) To him, this was a chance of a lifetime.

“I thought it would be really fascinating to be the only male at an all-women’s college,” said Usman…

Brother, we all want to try new things and get the most. I admire your educational ambitions. Once more we are the model minority. But…what do your parents think?

Usman, the fourth child of Pakistani immigrants who own a variety store in the Bronx, enrolled at Wellesley for the fall semester like everyone else. His parents, who dropped him off on campus, were surprised to see so many women, mostly because Usman had failed to tell them that Wellesley was a women’s college.

This is uncivilized act

Tipster Scherezade alerts us to a disturbing story out of Guwahati, about a protest gone horribly awry: beaten.jpg

Assam was rocked by violence during Saturday’s protests by tribals backed by the All Assam Adivasi Students’ Association (AAASA) students when locals brutally beat them up resulting in at least one death and over 250 people getting injured.
But not only were the Adivasi students beaten up but the women protesters were stripped and molested by the residents of Guwahati.
A local Assamese businessman Ratul Burman was seen attacking a woman after she was stripped during clashes on Saturday. Burman and two others have been arrested. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has announced a Rs 1 lakh compensation to the woman.

The Chief Minister has indicated that he wants Burman to receive the “maximum punishment” for his role in this assault. More than 250 people were injured in Saturday’s protests.

In more incidents of violence in Assam two more people have been killed, one of them shot in firing by the army.
Army was called in to stage flag marches in Guwahati on Saturday evening after Adivasi students went on the rampage, looting shops and burning vehicles in Assam’s capital city.

The cause of the protest? A desire for Scheduled Tribe status.

In her tip, Scherezade says:

Residents beat up women who were a part of the All Assam Adivasi Students’ Association (AAASA). Local media has been circulating videos of a businessman constantly hitting a naked woman in the genitals with his boots and beating her with a wooden plank. Heart-breaking stuff. Stories like these almost never catch the eye of the larger(read: western) media. People I know of, who were witness to this horrendous atrocity lie injured in a hospital. It’s tragic.

Title is a quote from Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, about Burman’s violent assault on the women in the photograph.
